If you live or own property in the City of Memphis, the political season is upon us. The Memphis City Council is about to consider an ordinance calling for the registration of all rental property in the city. This will require all rental property owners to pay an annual fee of $35.00 for each unit/dwelling.
But wait, there is more
Once the unit is registered, there will be a license to operate the unit.
But wait, there is more
After you have the license the unit will be required to be an owner-paid inspection before the unit can be occupied.
But wait, there is more
You may be required to attend Good Landlord Training”before” a license is issued to you to allow you to rent your property.
But wait, there is more
If your property goes vacant you will be subject to the NEW “Vacant Property Registration Ordinance”. This will require you to register your property with the city at a proposed cost of $200.00 ($500.00 if it is commercial).
But wait, there is more
It is the stated purpose of the proposed ordinance to encourage code officials to aggressively enforce improvements at problematic properties.

What can you do?
Get involved in the political process.
- Help the Memphis Investors Group in its efforts to defeat this counterproductive proposal
- Write the Mayor a “real letter” giving him your feelings (see the attached template), additionally
- Send the Mayor an email giving him your feelings (mayor@memphistn.gov), additionally
- Call the Mayor (901-636-6000) giving him your feelings, additionally
- Write the City Council Members a “real letter” giving them your feelings,(click here for the attached template), additionally
- Send the City Council Members an email (see:https://memphistn.gov/government/city_council) giving them your feelings, additionally
- Call the City Council Members (*01-636-6786) giving them your feelings, additionally
- Contribute to the campaigns of those that pledge to support your position, additionally
- Be prepared to addend the City Council Meeting when the vote is to be taken on the proposal, additionally.
And, if you really want to make an impact, Petitions to be on the ballot for Mayor and every City Council are available at the election commission offices (157 Poplar Ave., Suite 137) NOW. Petitions must be filed by NOON on July 18, 2019.
